I thoroughly enjoyed reading the riveting account of Albert Newson. Although Albert is a fictional character, his hyper-focusing, backtracking, and forgetting are representative of the everyday trials and tribulations that we with ADD experience every single day. As an young pre-teen growing up with ADD I was not labled ADD. I was simply referred to as: lazy, careless, not paying attention, and rude. However, I was none of those; I simply had ADD. Albert's account of leaving his trombone at home when he had to perform happened to me as well. It was at a time when I was hoping to be first chair in the band. But by leaving my horn at home I ended up in last chair. As an adult I was forced to compensate for my ADD in order to maintain my professional career. I remember one day when a co-worker came to my office and said, "Joel, I need your help on this case. I see that you are working on your checkbook, but can I have your complete attention?" "Sure, I said. "I'm just trying to figure out why my balance is off $16.00. But go ahead; you have my total attention." So my co-worker began explaining her problem. I nodded and gave her all of the positive signs that I was right there with her. When she finished she said, "So what do you think?" I paused a moment and then I snapped my fingers and said, "Wait a minute! I just remembered where that $16.00 went."I would highly recommend Reed Anderside's THE THORN IN MY FLESH to anyone who would like to take the journey from adolescense all the way to adulthood and experience the daily frustrations that those who suffer from ADD experience.
