The story of a young Union Pacific construction engineer and surveyor during the last two years surveying and building a railroad through the mountains of Wyoming.

This is the first Zane Grey novel I have read and it won't be the last. The writing style is still very readable even though the use of language seems a bit difficult and strange at times. The characters are well developed but can seem a little trite, sort of like old western movies of the 30s. There is some history to be learned between the lines also and I found the book gave me a certain incite into the history of the times.

My one objection was how the heroine always seemed to kidnapped by various villains. First she is attacked by indians, recovers, gets kidnapped by bad guys, then kidnapped by indians, escapes, is held hostage by her evil stepfather, escapes, is kidnapped by bad guys, turned over to her evil stepfather, escapes, is held in a brothel, escapes, is captured by her evil stepfather,,,, It got a little old by he end of the book. Complaints aside the book was well worth the time to download and read.,

The U P Trail Zane Grey 9781477470862 Books Reviews

Another great Zane Grey novel. No one ever lived who could describe the beauty of the countryside like this man and never lose contact with the story and characters. Simply wonderful!
As a recent fan of Zane Grey I loved this book. I have read maybe 10 others of his and this was the best so far. He makes you feel as if you were there. There is a ring of truth to this story as what it must have been like to build a railroad. There are good charters and great story lines with descriptions of where the were and the hardships they faced. If you have never read Zane Grey try this book. It is written in his usual style and is an easy read.
Not a bad book, if you like lots of romantic notions about the old west. Lots of action, etc., but how this very pretty girl can be kidnapped by just about every low down dirtbag in the whole west and still remain "untouched" is really laughable. Either these guys are rats or they aren't. I know morals weren't as awful as they are today, but come on. your characters have to have some consistency. If you want some background, type in "Zane Gray" hit search and read about this guy's life. Had a few problems in the man/ woman depart. himself. For the price, Great.
As a young man, Zane Grey was everything to me. I think I read every one of his books. I even subscribed to one of those services that shipped you a book a month (until I got the feeling they were printing a book a month just to keep me subscribing). But now, as an old fart (is that leagel here?) I find my tastes have changed. I would have marked it lower wxcept I think I'm grading myself more than the book. Just the name "Zane Grey", still brings warm feelings. I was just trying to recapture... Now I know what they mean by "You can never go back...,"

Zane Grey is best read with patience. His love of the country as evidenced by his detailed descriptions of scenery, plants, animals and the weather invites the reader's empathy, and dissuades one from an impatient desire for action. He inspires me to want to visit and witness the countryside for myself. His main characters form an integral part the setting interacting as they do with their surroundings.
I recommend Zane Grey to readers who are prepared to take him at his own pace. A satisfying read!
Zane Grey has long been acknowledged as the father of the western novel. He wrote fifty eight westerns and thirty other books. Progress was great, even in the west, but nature undespoiled was greater. Grey's work is very descriptive, painting pictures as if drawing on sand, or rock etching with his words.
This novel focuses on the construction of the Union-Pacific Railroad. This was the opening to the west, a gigantic part of the building expansion, the slight finger wiggle, the come-on nod, the knowing wink, and ultimately, the destruction of the frontier' s culture.
We meet unforgettable characters woven from the warp and woof of Grey's mind, those breathed to life by his lips. They represent the saints and the dregs from every social level, with every whim, folly and foible evident. They depict heroism, sacrifice, greed, violence, bigotry, lust and depravity. Human nature has been lain open. Necessity gnawed steadily, greedily, at their heels. Human ideals were hammered, then shattered. Illusions were erased.
You can get lost in Zane Grey's descriptions, or, you can wrap yourself within, and wear, the Jacob's coat of multi-colors. Excellent.
Building the Union Pacific Railroad, from West to East and from East to West and meeting in the middle, with bands of protesting Native Americans and all the forces of the earth's mountains and rivers is a huge feat to say the least. We don't pay enough tribute to those who made our ways on the roads and rails paved for us. From the words of Zane Grey he wrote me into the story and I felt as though I was right there hearing the noise of the building the rails and feeling the jar of the earth with each spike being pounded. Yes, it's a love story, but that too is breathtaking adventure.
You can't go wrong reading this book.
